Weekend Update

This weekend saw limited racing, with Matt Spohn and Stephan Kincaid taking on the prestigious Mengoni GP in NYC.  It was dreary conditions as they joined 100 others in what is dubbed the “NYC Worlds”.  Matt was one of the races bigger animators, present in many of the most dangerous break attempts, while Geronimo took turns with his team attempting to split the bunch.  In the end it came down to a group sprint with Geronimo acting as part of his teams lead-out and still running home 10th.  Matt was close behind in 14th in a race that saw only 29 finishers from a starting group of 100.

The rest of the crew enjoyed a quiet weekend preparing to close out the road season and jump into the cross action.

Riverfront Cross Update

I just received the great news that, out of several staple cross races on the NJ calendar, the Phillipsburg Riverfront Cross, set for Saturday December 5th, was selected to host this years New Jersey State Cyclocross Championships. The NJ Cross Committee welcomed the new venue based on the three year old events reputation as being such a fun, challenging course that offers a variety of obstacles not found in some of the other events.  I’m excited to get the selection and look forward to making the event a huge success. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer.

Crit Natz

This weekend saw the country’s best head to familiar Downers Grove, IL, for the US National Criterium Championships.  Racing got underway with the Saturday evening warm-up races. Laura rode a conservative race to prep for Sundays biggie, rolling in just inside the top 20. In the men’s Pro/Am, both Geronimo and Matt Spohn were on hand to loosen the legs and get a feel for the course. Geronimo made the decisive 15 man split, and after helping his team-mate take the sprint for 4th, rolled in 12th himself.  Matt rode comfortably in the group, saving the effort for Sunday.

The women were the first to kick off Sunday in the chase for stars and stripes. Laura rode an attentive race, covering dangerous moves late. Ultimately it came to a group sprint, and she finished just off the podium in 6th.

In the amateur men’s race, the rains came hard and made for some serious chaos.  In the end, 5 riders slipped clear, including one of Geronimo’s team-mates. Back in the group, after helping nullify any chase attempts, Geronimo led out the sprint and came home 2nd in the bunch, for 7th on the day.

Matt rode awesome all day for his first stab at a National Championship event….stayed out of trouble, and well positioned after the rain came. Unfortunately, he was taken down in a massive pile-up with just 5 laps to go that ended his likely run at a top spot, and saw him roll home in 46th.   A tough way to end the day for Matt, but gratifying to know he has the goods to be in there with the big guns.
(Full reports on nationals can be found here for the women  and  here for the men)

Back at home, Kevin Keane came out for his first race in a bit, looking to begin the ramp-up for cross. In a highly competitive 35+ at the Emerick Blvd Crit, he finished  with a solid top 20 ride.

All in all, a big congrats to the gang for representing well, locally, and at Nationals!  Everyone is on good form that will bode well for the big races yet to come.

Phillipsburg Crit

Just a reminder that as September approaches, that means that one of our events is on the horizon.  The 9th Annual Phillipsburg Crit is set for Saturday, September 5th, a week earlier than normal this year.  Once again, we are part of the Maxxis Garden State Cup for the Masters events, and the Champion Systems Cat 3 Cup.  We’ll have a host of races for every category, including citizens and kids.

You can check out the full schedule and details here,  and register for the event here.
Hope to see you out there!

CAT 1!!

As a culmination of last years 13th place overall at the UCI Tour of Belize, numerous top 10 finishes throughout this spring,  4th place overall at Fitchburg, and 7th overall at Crossroads, Gabe has been approved for his Cat 1 upgrade.  Big congrats to Gabe for achieving goal number one for the season, as we now look to goal number two and cross season..

NC Wrap-up

Well, the weekend is officially wrapped.  Saturdays final Crossroads race visited the Charlotte suburb of Harrisburg.  On a tight and technical course, both Gabe and I made the final selection of 13 after numerous attacks.  The plan was to try and put Gabe on the podium, which would hopefully move him into top 5 on the final overall.  Unfortunately, Gabe crashed with 1.5 laps to go, further injuring the wrist he fell on Friday night and suspected to be broken.  With a big enough gap on the field, he was able to stay clear for 13th place,  leaving him with a solid 7th place on the final omnium.   Although hoping for the top 5,  it was a great showing given the depth of each race, with riders from Colavita, Bissell, Team Type I, and Mt Khaki’s  providing fierce competition at each venue,  and the untimely broken wrist.

Matt Spohn also continued to show his mettle, being one the days chief animators and helping shape the winning selection.  Even after numerous attacks, Matt still came in top 10 for the day and cemented his 8th overall for the Crossroads omnium.  Matt will stay down in Winston -Salem for a few more days to cap off the Team Mt Khaki’s Development Camp before making his way home to prepare for the last part of the season.

Saturday night moved to downtown Charlotte for the Presbyterian Classic.  Laura Van Gilder rode a great race, marking all the other top sprinters, and conserving herself for the suspected sprinters finale.  In the end, it was a long drag race to the line and Laura came an excellent 4th place, just inches from top 3 and the podium.

In the Pro race, Stephan was feeling a bit off his game after his podium ride Friday and made the tough decision to pull out just past half way and try and conserve for Sundays Hanes Park race.

At Hanes Park, looking to avenge missing yesterdays  podium, Laura showed her speed and moved herself up a notch to grab 3rd place,  just narrowly missing second place.

In the pro race, relieved to feel better, Stephan patiently readied himself for the inevitable field sprint.  This time the legs were there, but the luck wasn’t.  In good position, Stephan got waylaid by a big pile-up on the last lap and had to use his effort just to catch back into the group as the sprint unfolded.  Despite the mishap, Stephan still rolled in 25th on the day.

Also finishing solidly in mid group was Matt Spohn, happy to have completed his first big-time NRC crit, and having done so in the mix the entire time.

Gabe decided to skip the race and start his planned rest period a day early, and to also give the broken wrist some time to heal before we head off into cross season.

On a final note, a big BIG thanks to the Busby family in Salisbury, NC, for opening their doors to us and being great hosts for the week.  It made the stay in NC much more relaxed and enjoyable.  Sarah and Bret went out of their way to make us feel at home and it was much appreciated.  Bret is an orthodontist in that area, so anyone in need, don’t hesitate to look him up here.   Guaranteed he will take great care of you.

Crossroads Update

So far, we are 4 days down and one to go in the Crossroads Classic Crits.  Tuesday and Wednesday saw bunch finishes, with Gabe logging top 25 finishes both nights.  Thursday nights Salisbury crit once again saw Gabe ride aggressive and attentive only missing the winning break due to an ill timed crash.  He recovered well however to take 9th in the bunch kick, for 13th on the night.

Friday night saw the addition of Stephan Kincaid to the mix, using the race as a tune up for this weekends NRC events, the  Presbyterian Hospital and Hanes Park Classics.  Stephan smartly covered a dangerous move with Team Mt Khaki’s to round out the winning 5 man break.  Outnumbered by Mt Khakis, Stephan still pulled down a podium performance, coming in 3rd.  Back in the field, I helped put Gabe in position w/ 3 laps to go and he overcame his earlier crash and additional mechanical to take 7th in the bunch kick, for 10th overall.

Also showing consistent form so far this week is Matt Spohn.  Matt’s been racing aggressive every night against the big boys, consistently factoring in many of the races break attempts, and logging top 25 finishes.  Hopefully Matt’s aggressiveness pays off with the sweet reward of a pro contract.

So several clients will be looking at a big day tomorrow, between Gabe’s top 10 quest at Crossroads; Stephan hoping to continue to capitalize on his form at Presbyterian Classic as he prepares for his late season goal of the US Elite National Crit Championships next week; and Laura Van Gilder will look to add the wins at Presbyterian and Hanes Park to her resume, as well as protect her series lead in the USA Crits series.

With these big races on tap, and an already successful run so far, look for big updates throughout the weekend.

Elk Grove, Lancaster, and NC..

Last weekend saw success in different parts of the country for several clients. Out in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove,  Laura Van Gilder sprinted her way to the win on day one,  also taking the big mid race preme,  and then a close second on day two.  And back at east at the Tour of Lancaster Crit,  Stephan Kincaid finally shook the monkey off his back for his first win of the season.  Having been so close so many times this season, Stephan was psyched with his victory,  attacking his break companions on the last lap after they’d lapped the field and coming in for the solo win.

This weekend will see Gabe, Matt Spohn, and myself heading to NC for the Giordana Crossroads Classic Crit Series.  Gabe will be looking for those final few Cat 1 upgrade points, while Matt will look to impress the staff at Team Mt Khakis in hopes of a future contract.   Stephan will also make his way down for the weekends NRC events, Presbyterian Hospital Classic and Hanes Park.

Look for updates throughout the week as the guys tear it up..
