Phillipsburg Crit:

Started in 2001, in partnership with Cyclefunattic Bike Shop, the Phillipsburg Crit showcases the riverfront towns historic downtown area.  It was originally started in an effort to shift tradition of races being held in bland industrial parks to putting them back in more picturesque downtown settings.  It’s an exciting venue with a long finish stretch along the main business district which encourages spectators to relax, enjoy the attractive atmosphere, and to browse shops along the course.

Each year, the race also has the distinction of being part of the Maxxis Garden State Cup for Masters, and the Champion Systems Cat 3 Cup.

Through the years, the event has had generous support from the Mayor and the town.  Some of the long time supporters also include the towns UEZ (Urban Enterprise Zone), and one of the biggest business’s in town, Atlantic States.  We also receive generous support from many of the business’s along Main St.

The race has traditionally been held the Saturday after Labor Day, and this year shifts back a week to the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.
The official race website can be found here, schedule information for the 2009 edition can be found here, and you can register here

Phillipsburg Riverfront Cross:

Having participated in cyclocross since the late 1980’s, I’ve always had a huge passion for this branch of racing.  Through the years I’ve watched ‘cross grow and many races elevate to UCI status.  Back in 2006, I again joined forces with Cyclefunattic to promote a cross race of my own, and to bring back that old school grass-roots feel.

The venue is Riverfront Park, at the end of Howard St, in downtown Phillipsburg.  It offers a scenic course, elevated above the Delaware river, and offers excellent terrain. We have a steep steep run-up (well, one person has managed to ride it in the past three years, and several have come close….), and equally steep descent, plenty of off-camber stuff,  a few sets of barriers, and other potential man made obstacles (this generally depends on my mood when I set up the day before….like I said, it’s old school ‘cross…) and plenty of fast grass and faster pavement.

To help add to the excitement, we also have a great announcer, hot beverages, and a loud crowd to cheer riders on the run-up.

The race is generally held the week before the US Cyclocross Championships in December. This year, we are set for Saturday December 5th. We are working on finalizing the schedule, so check back soon for full details.
