About

About Elliston Coaching:

The basis of my coaching methodology stems from what I have experienced and learned throughout my 25 years as an elite cyclist. These experiences have laid the foundation for my beliefs on training and racing, and have provided me with the tools to create programs designed to each athlete’s specific needs.

I believe in following a periodized program of specific timing an application of principles. When broken down, the principles of successful training are nearly the same as they have always been and really quite basic. These principles are the foundation of sport and a tried and true method still implored by the top level of elite athletes. This starts with a “bottom-up” philosophy of building a strong base of endurance, and then proceeding from there.

In using these beliefs, I take a more “old school” or organic approach in that I apply workouts based on perceived exertion and what the athlete tells me their responses are to different workloads.  I also use heart rate and power to help shape these decisions, but prefer not to base training exclusively on those parameters. I encourage athletes to get a feel for different workloads and situations first, and then use HR and power as supplemental means to gauge progress.

Finally, I believe communication is a large key to success. With all my programs, I offer a high degree of communication to ensure that training and racing is evaluated as frequently as possible to minimize chances of pitfalls.

I began cycling at age fourteen, racing at 15, and have been hooked since. Over that 25 year period I have competed successfully across local, national, and international levels.  I have competed all across the US and in countries such as Canada, Belize, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe and New Zealand.  I have also raced professionally with Navigators Insurance, Sony Music Studios, TARGETRAINING, and Rite Aid Pro Cycling.  In my final year as a professional, 2008, I had the distinction of being the oldest US registered professional.

I began mentoring team-mates and friends in the late 1990’s, began my formal coaching underneath Rick Crawford at Targetraining in 2005, and started my own coaching business in January 2007.  I have also helped run collegiate clinics, led weekend coaching camps, coached at USA Cycling Regional Development Camps (Mid Atlantic), directed for UCI teams at NRC events (multiple top 10 stage finishes and 7th, final GC), and assistant directed for the Mid Atlantic Development Junior Team at UCI Junior events (2- top 5 stage finishes).  Additionally, I am a USAC Level III coach.

Born in Chicago, I split time growing up between Easton, Pa and Chilmark, Ma, and now reside 3 miles north of Easton, in Forks Township, with Virginia, my wife of 14 years.
